Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder characterized by the body's inability to produce adequate hemoglobin, leading to anemia. It occurs when mutations affect the production of hemoglobin chains. There are two main types: alpha and beta thalassemia, depending on which part of the hemoglobin molecule is affected. Symptoms range from mild to severe and include fatigue, weakness, pale or yellowish skin, and facial bone deformities. Severe cases may require regular blood transfusions and chelation therapy to remove excess iron from the body. Prenatal testing can detect thalassemia, and genetic counseling is recommended for at-risk couples.
